What we do for you

Under Making Tax Digital you keep digital records and send HMRC an update by 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May, then a tax return after the year ends.

  1. Step 1

Upload your bank statements. From your business account, as the files your bank gives you.

  2. Step 2

We sort them. Each line goes in the right box on HMRC’s self-employment pages.

  3. Step 3

You check. Your quarterly figures are prepared and shown to you to check.

  4. Step 4

You send it. Your figures come as a file your software imports. You send them to HMRC yourself with free Making Tax Digital software.

Righto Tax uses automated software, including AI, to prepare your records. The company's director is accountable for the service, and you check and confirm every figure before anything is sent to HMRC.

Costs cleaners usually claim

Only the business part of a cost counts. Each one goes in a box on HMRC’s self-employment page.

  • Cleaning products, cloths and other supplies you use up on jobs (box 17)
  • Fuel, insurance, repairs and parking for a car or van you use for work, or a flat rate per business mile instead (box 20)
  • Repairs to your vacuums, ladders and other equipment (box 22)
  • Public liability insurance for the business (box 21)
  • Your work phone, and software and apps you use to run the business (box 23)
  • Advertising, a website and listings that bring in work (box 24)

Who it’s for: domestic cleaners, office cleaners, window cleaners, carpet cleaners, end-of-tenancy cleaners, and anyone else who does this work as a sole trader.

Questions people ask

Does Making Tax Digital apply to cleaners?

It depends on your income, not your line of work. Since 6 April 2026, it applies if your qualifying income was over £50,000 on your 2024-25 tax return. From 6 April 2027, it applies if your qualifying income was over £30,000 on your 2025-26 tax return. From 6 April 2028, it applies if your qualifying income was over £20,000 on your 2026-27 tax return. Qualifying income is the total of self-employment and property income before expenses (turnover), not profit.

Is it the same service as Righto Tax for Trades?

Yes. It’s the same service at the same standard price (the founding offer is for trades): your bank statements are sorted onto HMRC’s self-employment pages, your quarterly figures are prepared for you to check, and you confirm every figure. The only difference is CIS, which is for construction work, so it isn’t part of Righto Tax for Cleaners.

Can I claim mileage instead of my actual vehicle costs?

Often, yes. Simplified expenses let many self-employed people claim a flat rate for each business mile instead of working out their actual vehicle costs. Our free simplified expenses calculator compares the two.
