Where the numbers come from
Based on anonymised, aggregated answers from people who used Righto Tax tools or services and agreed to their answers being used for research. Groups smaller than 10 people are not shown, so no individual can be identified.
The only answer we use is the result the free checker gave each person: when Making Tax Digital starts for them, and whether their income is from self-employment, property or both. People are counted once, by their latest result, and only if they ticked the research box when they asked for their dates by email and then confirmed their email address, so automated sign-ups can't shape the figures. The figures you type into the checker never leave your browser, so they are not part of this.
The people who use a free checker are not a random sample of all sole traders and landlords, so treat the shares as describing our checker’s users, not the whole country. Each release states how many people it covers and the dates it spans.
