Four new deadlines a year, on top of the job

  • Every quarter, not once a year

Under Making Tax Digital you keep digital records and send HMRC an update by 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May, then a tax return after the year ends.

  • Penalty points for missed deadlines

Each missed deadline earns a point. At 4 points HMRC charges a £200 penalty, and another for each deadline missed after that. If you must join in April 2027, there are no points for 2027–28 updates, but you still have to send them.

  • CIS taken off all year

Contractors must deduct 20% from payments to you if you’re registered for CIS, and 30% if you’re not. Any overpayment only comes back when your tax return is filed.

  • Receipts in the van, evenings on spreadsheets

Each digital record needs the amount, the date and a category. Sorting a quarter’s transactions by hand takes hours you could be paid for.

Questions people ask

When does Making Tax Digital start for me?

Since 6 April 2026 if your qualifying income was over £50,000 on your 2024-25 tax return. From 6 April 2027 if your qualifying income was over £30,000 on your 2025-26 tax return. From 6 April 2028 if your qualifying income was over £20,000 on your 2026-27 tax return. Qualifying income is the total of self-employment and property income before expenses (turnover), not profit.

What counts towards the threshold?

Qualifying income is the total of self-employment and property income before expenses (turnover), not profit. Employment (PAYE) income, dividends, State and private pensions, and an individual partner's share of partnership profit do not count towards qualifying income.

How do I get my CIS deductions back?

Before you join Making Tax Digital, over-deducted CIS is claimed back through your Self Assessment tax return. Once you are in Making Tax Digital, HMRC adds your CIS deductions to your tax return, and any refund is requested separately through HMRC online services. Either way, the sooner after 5 April the return is filed, the sooner HMRC can repay you. HMRC's SA100 asks taxpayers to allow up to 4 weeks for a repayment to reach them before contacting HMRC.

What happens if I miss a quarterly update?

Each missed quarterly update or tax return deadline earns one penalty point; at 4 points a £200 penalty is charged, plus £200 for each later missed deadline. There are no penalties for missing a quarterly update deadline for the 2026-27 tax year, but records and updates are still required and late tax returns and late payments are still penalised. At the Budget on 28 October 2026 the government said it will not give late submission penalty points for 2027-28 quarterly updates to people who must join MTD for Income Tax in April 2027; they still have to send the updates before they can submit their tax return.

Do I pay my tax on different dates?

MTD for Income Tax does not change how tax is paid or the payment due dates.

Do I have to give you my HMRC password?

No. We never sign in to HMRC for you or ask for your HMRC login. We prepare your quarterly figures, and you send them to HMRC yourself with free Making Tax Digital software.

Who checks my figures?

Righto Tax uses automated software, including AI, to prepare your records. The company's director is accountable for the service, and you check and confirm every figure before anything is sent to HMRC. NJG Consultancy Ltd is not a member of a professional accountancy body.

This is general information to help you understand the rules. It isn't tailored to your circumstances, so check your own position before acting on it.
