In our reading, yes: skips, tip fees, waste removal and a waste carrier registration for your work are allowable. Registration is usually free if you carry only your own waste, otherwise £191.02 (GOV.UK, checked 17 October 2026). Fines are not.
Trades make waste, and getting rid of it costs money. GOV.UK says self-employed people can deduct their running costs from their income to work out their taxable profit. The law, section 34 of the Income Tax (Trading and Other Income) Act 2005, only stops costs that are not incurred wholly and exclusively for the trade. Clearing rubble, offcuts and old fittings from a customer's job is part of the work.

What counts
GOV.UK does not list skips or tip fees by name. In our reading, these are running costs of the business when the waste comes from your work:
- skip hire, including any skip licence the hire firm passes on to you
- skip bags and their collection
- gate fees at a commercial waste site or tip
- paying a licensed waste firm to take a load away
GOV.UK says any waste from a commercial activity is business waste, and that includes waste from construction and demolition. A skip for clearing out your own house is personal, so it does not count. If one skip takes both, only the business part can be claimed.
Under the cash basis, the standard way to record income and expenses, you count a cost when you pay it. GOV.UK says to count only the expenses you have actually paid.
Charging the skip back to the customer
Many trades add the skip to the customer's bill. The tax return notes say turnover is the total your business receives before taking off any expenses, so the amount the customer pays you for the skip is income. The skip hire you paid is the cost. Record both: they cancel each other out, but leaving both out makes your turnover look smaller than it is.
In our reading, if you are VAT registered, a skip you hire in your own name is normally part of what you sell to the customer, so VAT is due on it like the rest of the job. VAT Notice 700 lets a cost be left out of the value you charge VAT on, as a disbursement, only when every one of its conditions is met, including that you paid as the customer's agent and the customer received and used the service. Our guide on registering for VAT covers when VAT applies to you.
The waste carrier registration
GOV.UK says a business must register in England if it transports waste, and that you can get an unlimited fine if you do not. You must also register if you want to dispose of your own waste regularly. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland each have their own process.
As checked on 17 October 2026, GOV.UK says registration is usually free if you only transport waste you produce yourself, and otherwise costs £191.02. You are told whether your registration is upper tier or lower tier. An upper tier registration must be renewed every 3 years for £130.25, and a lower tier one does not need renewing.
GOV.UK does not say how the fee is treated for tax. In our reading it is a running cost of a business that carries waste, and HMRC's manual says a charge from a regulator that is broadly meant to cover the regulator's costs is normally allowable.
Fines are not claimable
HMRC's manual says a fine for breaking the law is not allowable, because it is not incurred wholly and exclusively for the trade. In our reading, that covers a fine for fly-tipping and a fine from a council. GOV.UK says that if you put a skip on a public road without the safety lights and markings your council asks for, you could be fined up to £1,000. You or the skip hire firm need a skip licence from your council for a skip on a public road, and in most areas the hire firm gets it.
Keep the paperwork
GOV.UK says your business and the business taking your waste both need to fill in and sign a waste transfer note for each load of non-hazardous waste, or use a document with the same information, such as an invoice. Each keeps a copy for 2 years. In our reading, the same invoice is also your record of the cost for tax. Our guide on how long to keep business records covers the tax side.
A worked example
A self-employed builder on the cash basis does kitchen strip-outs in 2026-27 and is not VAT registered. The builder registers as a waste carrier and pays £191.02. Over the year the builder hires 3 skips at £260 each and charges each one back to the customer at cost, makes 12 trips to a commercial waste site at £45 a trip, and gets a £150 council fine for a skip left without lights.
| Item | Amount | Claimable |
|---|---|---|
| Skip hire, 3 x £260 | £780 | £780 |
| Waste site gate fees, 12 x £45 | £540 | £540 |
| Waste carrier registration | £191.02 | £191.02, in our reading |
| Council fine | £150 | £0 |
The claimable costs come to £1,511.02 (£780 + £540 + £191.02). The £150 fine is not claimable. The £780 the customers paid for the skips goes into turnover as income. This is an example only.
What this means for you
Waste costs reduce your taxable profit when the waste comes from your work, unless you take the £1,000 trading allowance instead of claiming expenses. The traps are leaving out the skip money a customer pays you, mixing in a personal clear-out, and claiming a fine.
Steps to claim waste costs
- Keep every skip, tip and waste firm invoice, which can double as your waste transfer note if it has the same information.
- Record skip charges you pass on to customers as income.
- Leave out any personal waste and any fines.
- In our reading, put skips, tip fees and the waste carrier registration under other business expenses, box 30 in the notes to the 2025-26 full self-employment pages. If you include any non-business part, also put it in box 45.
- If your turnover is below £90,000, you can put your total expenses in box 31 instead of a breakdown.

Questions people ask
Can I claim the skip I hire for a customer's job?
In our reading, yes. A skip for your work is a cost of running the business, and the law only stops costs that are not wholly and exclusively for the trade. A skip for clearing your own house is personal and does not count.
I charge the skip back to my customer. Do I still claim it?
Yes. Record what the customer pays you as income and the skip hire as a cost. The two cancel out, but both belong in your records.
Can I claim my waste carrier registration?
In our reading, yes, as a running cost of the business. GOV.UK says registration is usually free if you only carry waste you produce yourself, and otherwise costs £191.02. An upper tier registration is renewed every 3 years for £130.25.
Can I claim a fine for fly-tipping or a skip without lights?
No. HMRC's manual says a fine for breaking the law is not allowable, because it is not incurred wholly and exclusively for the trade.
Which box do skips and tip fees go in on my tax return?
The notes do not name them. In our reading they are other sundry running costs, box 30. If your turnover is below £90,000, the notes let you put total expenses in box 31 without a breakdown.
