Call HMRC's Self Assessment general enquiries line on 0300 200 3310, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. GOV.UK added Making Tax Digital for Income Tax to that helpline's page on 28 July 2026.
GOV.UK sends Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD) questions to the Self Assessment team rather than a separate helpline. That covers who needs it, signing up and using it. Problems signing in go to a different line, and problems with your software go to the company that makes it. The numbers and hours below are as shown on GOV.UK on 16 October 2026.

HMRC also answers general questions on X at @HMRCcustomers, Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday 8am to 4pm. It cannot discuss your own tax affairs there, so do not post personal details.
Agents have their own line, the Agent Dedicated Line, and use that instead.
Try the digital assistant first
HMRC's guidance says its digital assistant can help with who needs to sign up and when, checking for an exemption, choosing software, signing up and using MTD. It answers general questions, not ones about your own figures. If it cannot help, you can ask to be passed to a webchat with an HMRC adviser, if one is available.
Software problems go to the provider first
GOV.UK is clear that HMRC cannot answer technical questions about your MTD software, because each product works differently. If something goes wrong in your software at the tax return stage, contact your provider first. Only if they cannot fix it, and you still cannot confirm your tax calculation is correct or submit your return, do you tell HMRC, as soon as possible.
What this means for you
Most MTD questions are about the rules, so 0300 200 3310 is the number to keep. Sign-in trouble is 0300 200 3600. Anything about how your software records, sorts or sends figures is for your provider.
A few situations have their own route:
- Exemptions. Call or write to Self Assessment general enquiries. If you write, GOV.UK asks for the subject line "Making Tax Digital for Income Tax — exemption application", or "Making Tax Digital for Income Tax — digitally excluded application" if you are digitally excluded. HMRC aims to reply within 28 calendar days.
- Refunds. You cannot claim a refund in an MTD tax return. You request it through your HMRC online services account. For CIS subcontractors, HMRC adds the CIS deductions it holds to your MTD tax return for you to check, and any refund is then requested through your HMRC online services account, not in the return.
- Early testers. If you signed up to test MTD for 2024-25 or 2025-26, a dedicated support team's number is in your sign-up letter. It cannot help with 2026-27 or later years.
- Extra support. If a health condition or your circumstances make contact hard, ask the adviser for HMRC's extra support team, or use its webchat.
Steps before you call
- Check whether your question is about the rules, your sign-in or your software, and pick the line from the table above.
- Have your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) ready. The online services helpdesk asks for it, and the UTR guide shows where to find it.
- Have your National Insurance number, name and address ready, plus any HMRC letter you are calling about. An exemption request needs all three.
- Make sure your address and personal details are up to date in your personal or business tax account. The technical helpline may ask security questions, and out-of-date details can fail them.
- Call between 8am and 6pm on a weekday. GOV.UK says waits on the online services line can be up to 45 minutes.
The free MTD check answers the most common question, whether and when MTD applies to you, without a phone call. There is more for tradespeople in the trades section and for landlords in the landlord section.
Hold your place on the waitlist
We’ll email you when Trades Tax opens, with the founding offer while places last. No payment is taken.
