Can I claim fuel as a self-employed tradesperson? Yes. In 2026-27 you claim van or car fuel either as an actual cost, cut for private use, or within the flat mileage rate of 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles, not both. No. GOV.UK says the flat rate is used instead of the actual costs of buying and running the vehicle, and HMRC's manual lists fuel and oil among the costs it covers. Parking, tolls and congestion charges for business journeys can still go on top. Not as digital records under Making Tax Digital. GOV.UK says that if you are sure you will use simplified expenses, you do not need digital records of your actual expenses. You do need a mileage log made at the time, because that is what supports the claim. Generally not for building work. Since 1 April 2022 red diesel is limited to set machines and uses, such as agriculture, horticulture, forestry and heating or power for premises not used for commercial purposes. HMRC named construction and plant hire among the sectors moving to white diesel. Read the full answer, with every source, at rightotax.co.uk.
