Can I claim my van as a business expense? Yes. A self-employed tradesperson can claim a van either with the flat mileage rate, 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in 2026-27, or with actual costs plus the van's price. 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles and 25p a mile after that. Before 6 April 2026 the first rate was 45p. No. The mileage rate replaces the actual running costs, including fuel, insurance, repairs and servicing. You can still claim parking and other travel such as train fares on top. Not for the same van. GOV.UK says you cannot use the mileage rate for a vehicle you have already claimed capital allowances on or included as an expense. Once you use the mileage rate for a van, you keep using it while that van is in the business. Read the full answer, with every source, at rightotax.co.uk.
