Can I leave Making Tax Digital if my income falls? Yes, but not straight away. You can opt out after 3 tax years in a row with qualifying income of £20,000 or less, so the earliest anyone can leave on that basis is for 2029-30. No. A single year under the threshold is not enough. Your qualifying income has to be £20,000 or less for 3 tax years in a row while you are using MTD, unless an amended return for the previous year takes you under the threshold. For people who started on 6 April 2026, GOV.UK's example is after the end of the 2028-29 tax year, so they would not need MTD for 2029-30. The fourth quarterly update for 2028-29 is due by 7 May 2029. You select the opt-out option in your HMRC online services account, or your agent does it in their agent services account. The option only appears if HMRC's records show you are eligible. Read the full answer, with every source, at rightotax.co.uk.
