Questions people ask

What is the Construction Industry Scheme?

The Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) is how HMRC collects tax from subcontractors paid by contractors for construction work. The contractor takes a deduction from each payment and passes it to HMRC as an advance payment towards the subcontractor's tax and National Insurance.

How much do contractors deduct under CIS?

20% if you are registered for CIS, 30% if you are not, and nothing if HMRC has given you gross payment status.

How do I get my CIS deductions back?

Before you join Making Tax Digital, over-deducted CIS is claimed back through your Self Assessment tax return. Once you are in Making Tax Digital, HMRC adds your CIS deductions to your tax return, and any refund is requested separately through HMRC online services. Either way, the sooner after 5 April the return is filed, the sooner HMRC can repay you. HMRC's SA100 asks taxpayers to allow up to 4 weeks for a repayment to reach them before contacting HMRC.

Do I still need a tax return if CIS is taken from my pay?

If you are a sole trader or partner, yes. CIS deductions are payments towards your tax, not the end of it. Your tax return works out what you really owe and sets your deductions against it.
