Hnry charges 1% + VAT of your self-employed income, capped at £600 + VAT a year, as listed on 17 October 2026. Our yearly plan is a fixed £350 including VAT, but our service is not open yet.
Hnry works much like ours: it does your Making Tax Digital (MTD) quarterly updates and your tax return for you, and it supports CIS subcontractors. The big differences are how you pay and where your money goes. Hnry takes a percentage of every payment into its own account. We charge a fixed price and work from the bank account you already have. Our tax plans start once our HMRC registrations are complete. Until then you can join the waitlist, and no payment is taken.

Founding offer on Trades Tax (coming later), first 500 trades clients: £5 a month for your first 3 months, then £35 a month. Cancel any time. We’ll remind you before it changes. Prices include VAT. No payment is taken while you wait.

Prices compared
Hnry's prices were checked on its website on 17 October 2026. Hnry lists them plus VAT, so the including-VAT figures are ours, worked out at 20%. Our prices include VAT.
| Self-employed income in a year | Hnry fee as listed | Hnry including VAT | Our yearly plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| £20,000 | £200 + VAT | £240 | £350 including VAT |
| £30,000 | £300 + VAT | £360 | £350 including VAT |
| £40,000 | £400 + VAT | £480 | £350 including VAT |
| £60,000 or more | £600 + VAT (the cap) | £720 | £350 including VAT |
The two cost the same at about £29,167 of income. Below that, Hnry's fee is lower than our yearly plan. Above it, Hnry's fee is higher, up to its cap. If you pay us monthly, our Trades Tax plan is £35 a month including VAT. The founding offer for the first 500 trades clients is £5 a month for your first 3 months, then £35 a month. Cancel any time. We'll remind you before it changes.
Hnry's service agreement also says it may ask for a one-off £150 + VAT fee if you first use its account within 45 days of the tax year end, or if you do not accept your return summary by its deadline.

When Hnry is the better choice
- Your income is under about £29,000. At £20,000, Hnry's fee comes to £200 + VAT, or £240 including VAT. Our yearly plan is £350 including VAT.
- You want your tax set aside for you. Hnry deducts and pays your tax every time you are paid, so there is no bill to save up for.
- You want invoicing and VAT returns in one fee. Hnry sends and chases invoices, and its fee covers VAT returns.
- You want to talk to a person. Its MTD page lists unlimited support from its team.
- You need to start now. Our tax plans are not open yet.
When our service may suit you better
- You want to keep your own bank account. Hnry asks for your self-employed income to be paid into its account, and charges on income that bypasses it.
- You earn more than about £29,000. At £40,000 of income, Hnry's fee comes to £400 + VAT, or £480 including VAT. Our yearly plan is £350 including VAT. Both prices checked 17 October 2026.
- You are often over-deducted under CIS. Hnry's CIS page explains how it tops up tax beyond your deductions, but not how an over-deduction is repaid, so ask. With us: before you join Making Tax Digital, over-deducted CIS is claimed back through your Self Assessment tax return. Once you are in Making Tax Digital, HMRC adds your CIS deductions to your tax return, and any refund is requested separately through HMRC online services. Either way, the sooner after 5 April the return is filed, the sooner HMRC can repay you.
- You also let property. Ask Hnry how it handles rent. We have separate landlord plans.
What this means for you
If your self-employed turnover and rent before expenses came to more than £30,000 in 2025-26, MTD starts for you on 6 April 2027. Your first quarterly update covers 6 April to 5 July 2027 and is due by 7 August 2027. Each missed deadline earns a penalty point, and 4 points means a £200 penalty.
A percentage fee rises with a good year. A fixed fee does not. Work out both on what you expect to earn, and compare prices including VAT. Whoever you choose acts as your agent with HMRC, and only your main agent can send your tax return.
Steps to choose between them
- Use the free MTD check to see whether and when MTD starts for you.
- Estimate your self-employed income for the year, before CIS deductions.
- Work out Hnry's fee at 1.2% including VAT, up to £720, and compare it with a fixed yearly price.
- Decide whether you are happy to move your work income into a new account.
- Ask each provider how a CIS over-deduction is claimed back, and whether you see the figures before they are sent.
- If you want a fixed price, see the trades plan and join the waitlist. No payment is taken.
Hold your place on the trades waitlist
We’ll email you when Trades Tax opens, with the founding offer while places last. No payment is taken.
Questions people ask
How much does Hnry cost in the UK?
1% + VAT of each payment into your Hnry Account, capped at £600 + VAT a year, as listed on 17 October 2026. That is 1.2% and £720 including VAT. Payments under £50 carry a minimum fee of £0.50 + VAT each.
Does Hnry work for CIS subcontractors?
Yes. Hnry's CIS page, updated 22 April 2026, says it takes the CIS already deducted from your pay into account and works out and pays only what you owe on top.
Do I have to be paid into the Hnry Account?
By default, yes. Hnry's service agreement asks for all self-employed income to go through the Hnry Account, and says self-employed income received directly is still charged at 1% + VAT.
Is Hnry's fee worked out before or after CIS is taken off?
Before. Hnry's service agreement says that where tax is withheld before a payment reaches the Hnry Account, its fee is charged on the gross amount.
Can I use your service now?
Not yet. Our tax plans start once our HMRC registrations are complete. Until then you can join the waitlist, and no payment is taken.
