Pie's app is free, and its managed Making Tax Digital package was £199 a year on 16 October 2026, VAT not stated. Our yearly plans are £350 for trades and £150 or £200 for landlords, including VAT.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD) means keeping digital records, sending HMRC four quarterly updates a year and filing a tax return. Pie offers both ends: a free app where you do it yourself, and paid plans where its tax experts do the updates. Our service does the work from your bank feed or records using automated software, and you check and confirm every figure before anything is sent to HMRC. Our tax plans start once our HMRC registrations are complete. Until then you can join the waitlist, and no payment is taken.
Want your books sorted?

When Pie is the better choice
- You are happy to do it yourself. The Pie app costs nothing, including submitting to HMRC.
- You want a lower price for a managed MTD package. Pie's MTD Package was £199 a year on 16 October 2026, VAT not stated. Our Trades Tax plan is £350 a year, including VAT.
- You have other income too. Pie's package covers your return "inc additional incomes", and Pie lists capital gains among the income it handles.
- You want to talk to a person. Its MTD Package and £89 Tax Support plan include tax support all year round.
- You need to start now. Our tax plans are not open yet.
When our service may suit you better
- You let 1 or 2 properties in England. Our Landlord Tax plan is £150 a year, including VAT, and includes a compliance calendar for each property (gas, EICR, EPC, deposit, Right to Rent, alarms and your PRS Database entry), with reminder emails before each date.
- You want the price stated including VAT. Every price we quote includes VAT, so the figure you see is the figure you pay.
- You are a CIS subcontractor. Pie handles CIS too. With us: before you join Making Tax Digital, over-deducted CIS is claimed back through your Self Assessment tax return. Once you are in Making Tax Digital, HMRC adds your CIS deductions to your tax return, and any refund is requested separately through HMRC online services. Either way, the sooner after 5 April the return is filed, the sooner HMRC can repay you.
What this means for you
If your self-employed turnover and rent before expenses came to more than £30,000 in 2025-26, MTD starts for you on 6 April 2027. Your first quarterly update covers 6 April to 5 July 2027 and is due by 7 August 2027. Each missed deadline earns a penalty point, and 4 points means a £200 penalty.
Whichever you choose, check that the software is on the GOV.UK software finder, and that you see the figures before anything goes to HMRC. Whoever acts for you is your agent, and only your main agent can send your tax return.

- Ask how your CIS deductions or rental costs are recorded and checked.
- If you want our service, see the plans for trades or landlords and join the waitlist. No payment is taken.
